International Trade in Arms Regulation

If you're lucky, you have never heard of the "International Trade in Arms Regulation" treaty, or ITAR. Administered by the State Department through something called the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), this treaty is supposed to keep track of "defense" exports. Unfortunately, what you don't know is about to hurt you.

Re: International Trade in Arms Regulation

It currently includes a lot of things you might not consider as obvious weapons, like that lap-top you take on a business trip or the email encryption software you have installed. ITAR has been around for a long time and covers many items 'they' can use against 'us' (internationally speaking)

OK I read your link.... the registration and (annual?) fee is the issue. I don't know but I don't know that the manuf would HAVE to register - they might be able to list the product as 'not for export' and be done with it. Only if you want to participate in the global market would it be a cost. What if you outsourced production overseas? Would that still apply? $2250 is chump change for most business and its a tax writeoff - sure you have to pay it and it is another one of those fees like so many others that are not fair.

Where ITAR is more of a problem is for you and me taking things with us on trips out of the country - not realizing they are on the list - you can become a criminal while walking through customs - I know Contractors and even US Govt workers that have had their DOD owned laptops confiscated by customs for not decalaring and getting clearance for them BEFORE taking their jaunt to Europe on official business.
